Rovaniemi, capoluogo della lapponia finlandese, a ridosso del circolo polare artico.

Da persone di città, non abituate a quelle temperature e paesaggi invernali, è qualcosa di magnifico tutto quel bianco e quel freddo, che tanto manca oggi da noi.

È stato bellissimo fotografare persi nelle foreste innevate, o cercare di rendere vividi colori quasi del tutto inesistenti, c’era bianco ovunque e in questo periodo anche poca luce.

La mia personale preoccupazione più grande, da amatore, era scattare a -15°C, temevo per l’attrezzatura.

Alla fine fotografare a basse temperature, soprattutto se c’è una calda base a cui tornare, è fattibile, ma bisogna prestare la giusta attenzione a un paio di fattori: gli sbalzi di temperatura, piuttosto che le temperature assolute, e gli alloggiamenti di dispositivi elettronici e batterie.

Ho seguito informazioni recuperate da professionisti e blog di settore, in particolare questo.

Gli sbalzi di temperatura sono tra le cose più pericolose per la fotocamera, quindi, nel mio zainetto (tutte le note techiche in basso), avevo la camera nuda quando stavo in giro, così da rendere più facile l’utilizzo con i sottoguanti. Prima di entrare in posti caldi, impacchettavo fotocamera e obiettivo con i sacchetti e chiudevo ermeticamente; poi fotocamera a riposo per un po’ di tempo.

Non ho mai avuto problemi.

Per quanto riguarda gli altri dispositivi, beh, la GoPro, tenuta nuda nelle tasche più esterne della giacca, ha sofferto parecchio, e in svariate occasioni si è “freezata” e non ha registrato più. Tenendola nella tasca interna della giacca, si riscaldava, e riprendeva a macinare.

L‘iPhone, tenuto in tasca interna, vicino al corpo, non dava nessun problema, mentre nella tasca esterna abbatteva la durata della batteria del 70%/80% in circa un’ora.

Batterie di ricambio, tenute sempre nella parte più calda dello zaino, o nella tasca interna della giacca.

Altra cosa che ho messo nello zainetto, ma più per eccesso di zelo, sono i sacchettini di gel essiccante, non necessari, ma non fanno male. Non ha senso metterli nelle buste antigelo, invence aiutano a tenere lo zaino internamente più asciutto.

Alla fine non ho scattato tantissimo, ma l’attrezzatura ha retto, e le temperature (mediamente -10/-20°C) sono state un ottimo banco di prova per il prossimo viaggio al freddo.

As city dwellers, not used to those winter temperatures and landscapes, all that white and cold that is so missing from us today is something magnificent.

It was wonderful to photograph lost in the snowy forests, or try to make vivid colours that were almost completely non-existent, there was white everywhere and even low light in this period.

My biggest personal concern, as an amateur, was shooting at -15°C, I was afraid for the equipment.

In the end, photographing at low temperatures, especially if there is a warm base to return to, is feasible, but you need to pay due attention to a couple of factors: the temperature changes, rather that the absolute temperatures, and the housing of electronic devices and batteries.

I followed information retrieved from professionals and blogs in the sector, in particular this.

Steps in temperature are among the most dangerous things for the camera, therefore, in my backpack (all the technical notes below), I had the camera naked when I was around, so as to make easier to use with undergloves. Before entering hot places, I would pack the camera and lens in bags and seal them tightly; then camera at rest for a while.

I’ve never had any problems.

As for the other devices, well, the GoPro, kept naked in the outermost pockets of the jacket, suffered a lot, and on various occasions it “froze” and no longer recorded. Keeping it in the inside pocket of his jacket, it would warm up, and start grinding again.

The iPhone, kept in the internal pocket, close to the body, did not give any problems, while in the external pocket it reduced the battery life by 70%/80% in about an hour.

Spare batteries, always kept in the warmest part of the backpack, or in the inside pocket of the jacket.

Another thing I put in my backpack, but more out of an excess of zeal, are the sachets of desiccant gel, not necessary, but they don’t hurt. It makes no sense to put them in the antifreeze bags, instead they help to keep the backpack drier inside.

In the end, I didn’t shoot a lot, but the equipment held up, and the temperatures (on average -10/-20°C) were an excellent test bench for the next trip in the cold.
